I attended a church where they did the offering ofnpeace in the beginning of the Mass and I didnt understand what was happening. Once i realized what was happening infelt likeninhad stepped into the twilight zone.
does it matter if you use the right knee or the left knee to genuflect? I always thought you use your right knee but I have seen it with the left as well which makes it a bit confusing…

I’m not catholic but I feel the need to experience this.
Unfortunately every Catholic does not know this information. Is this suppose to be a secret that Catholics are not suppose to know?.The question should be is Why every Catholic is not aware of the explanation of the step-by-step Mass meaning. It is no doubt the one reason that during mass you see so many bored people because they don't understand the significance and relevance of that which is happening.
I recognize the importance of the Eucharist Holy Communion but he Homilies are far too short. Many times the Homily falls on deaf ears on those sitting in the Church Pews and this is directly the fault of that individual delivering the Homily standing in the Pulpit. " Faith come by Hearing and Hearing through the Word of God" (Romans 10:17). I have NEVER seen parishioners of the Catholic Church in Pembroke Ontario- ST. COLUMBKILLE'S CATHEDRAL (Built in 1856) after the conclusion of the Mass excitingly speaking to one another about the HOMILY that was delivered- NEVER. On the contrary the parishioners can't seem to get out of Church fast enough to get into their cars and skedaddle. The parishioners don't even bring a Bible.
On a Sunday after the 5:15 PM Mass, I mentioned this to the Priest-Reverend given that an opportunity presented itself after the Church parishioners vacated in record time. The Priest response was somewhat shocking but predictable: He said " This is what modern Catholics are like.. I'm thankful that they even bother to show up". That was the end of the conversation as he was also busy and concentrating on vacating the Church.
On Sunday I visit my parents, relatives buried in ST. COLUMBKILLE CEMETERY and on several occasions get to talking with others paying their respects. The conversation always seems to eventually involve the Cross and the Blood of Jesus Christ.
All those that I spoke to reiterate the same point about Mass. The Homilies/sermons are not long enough and they want and need more. They want to hear the scriptures spoken and the meaning and significance of the scriptures." Faith come by Hearing and Hearing through the Word of God" (Romans 10:17). The Bible has many but I seem to always be directed to 1 CORINTHIANS: 1:17-25.
I made a mistake but not one that I do not regret but perhaps I should have remained silent. On the conclusion of the Mass on July 27,2025 I was still sitting in the pew when most but not all the parishioners had just left the church when the presider/celebrant Rev. Mitchell Beachey at ST. COLUMBKILLE CATHEDRAL, Pembroke Ontario was walking down the aisle and asked if I could speak to him for a moment. I apologized for taking up his time as he seemed intent on wanting to leave the premises.
I began by asking permission to ask a question and he agreed.
As a bible reader, I began the question first by quoting from memory the following; I said in
1 Corinthians 1:17-25
Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition
17 For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
Christ the Power and Wisdom of God
18 For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
19 For it is written,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the cleverness of the clever I will thwart.”
20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. 22 For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
To this Rev. Beachery nodded his head in agreement.
So far so good I thought. I then asked the question;
Considering 1 Corinthians 1;17-25; could the Homilies be made longer as many people desire to hear more of the Scripture at Mass. It seems this was interpreted as some form of insult but was not intended as such.
He became very angry and said, " IF YOU WANT TO HEAR LONGER SERMONS THEN GO TO THE PENTACOSTS!" It seems he does not like the Pentacosts for some reason.
I just simply looked at him in disbelief and proceeded to leave the church.
He became very vocal with additional rude comments as I was leaving. I suspect he was grandstanding for the few remaining parishioners. So much for the Holy Spirit in Rev. Beachery just after conducting Mass. I thought he might be a Catholic Pharisee. How disappointing. I was Baptized, First Communion and Confirmation in this Church. I went out West during my teens and and after many many year only recently returned to Pembroke. Although I do not need to live here.
I understand that In the Catholic tradition, the Eucharist is the central focus of the Mass. The homily serves to prepare the congregation for the reception of the Eucharist, rather than being the primary focus of the service.
Some argue that modern attention spans are shorter, making lengthy sermons less effective. Pope Francis, for example, has advocated for shorter homilies, saying that people will lose focus and fall asleep after about eight minutes.
If the parishioners are falling asleep listening to the word of God then they really don't want to be at Mass in the first place and simply going through the motions and lip service.
In Matthew 7:23 of the Catholic Bible, Jesus declares, "And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." This verse is part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus warns that not everyone who calls him "Lord" will enter the kingdom of heaven. He emphasizes that those who claim to have prophesied, cast out demons, or performed miracles in his name will be rejected if they do not do the will of his Father.
When an individual walks into the Catholic Church(Mandatory Bible In Hand) for Mass then a printed version of the "Step-By-Step Guide to the Mass" with all the necessary information regarding Readings and Homilies for that day so people can use it as a guide and read along while concentrating on worshiping Jesus Christ Trinity. After Mass this Step-by-Step Guide of the Mass will remain in the Church. People should be in Church at least 30-45 minutes before the Mass to familiarize themselves with the Mass readings and contemplate on them in prayer.
There can be many many versions prepared for every Mass and each would have different Readings and Homilies based upon approved Catholic Teaching by the Vatican. Volunteers would be selected to distribute and collect the Mass Guide on the day of the service.
In the day of computers an Individual could download and print the version for that Mass they will be attending.
This would allow more interaction in the Church with parishioner participation.
The main reason is to fully understand the celebration of the EUCHARIST and receive and understand the word of God as delivered to parishioners by the Catholic Church. It should not be held secret like some Pharisee ritual.
The Homilies should be minimal 20 minutes or longer and by having the Homily in printed form allow them to read along. The Mass in the Columbkill Church are difficult to hear and delivered far to fast. It seems they are speed talking.
A Mass that lasts only 25 minutes with people oblivious to what is happening and then scrambling to get out is not True Worship. I am strongly convinced that people at Mass also what to hear more of the word of God via the Homily.
I have have witnessed some very weak Homilies delivered. One Homily was on "Boys and their toys" and the Reverend spoke on how he purchased a 4-wheeler used it for awhile then sold it … I so lost interest that day in the Homily and began reading my Bible. This was on a Easter Sunday when the crucifixion and the resurrection of CHRIST should have been the paramount topic for the Homily.
Another was 3-weeks ago when during a heat wave the subject of the Homily was Snowflakes and how they blind people at night when you are driving- suggesting are you a snowflake blinding others. This would possibly may have relevance in the Canadian winter but not at the high of summer. The church was hot and people were not paying attention and fidgeting about in the pews.Maybe some were wishing it was winter. It just seems to be a lack of genuine preparation and interest on the part of the Church Celebrant.
I enjoy cycling as God has granted me the ability to do so after surviving a accident were a car hit me while riding my bike. I suffered some serious injuries but I cannot help to think "there but for the grace of God go I". I watched after Mass as I was preparing to ride my bike the 20km home, the priest leaving the church with a cigarette in his mouth trying to speak to one of the young Altar Servers. I thought to myself that is a poor example of resisting the false pleasures that a vice provides. If you have taken the vocation of the priesthood then you should have the power of the Holy Spirit to resist the worldly vices.
As a child I was always nervous, tentative and unsure of myself in the presence of a Catholic Priests for some reason. I will always remain Catholic but I unfortunately will not attend Mass no longer at St. Columbkille Church. I will continue with Biblical Christian Teachings. I may have to visit a Pentecost Church as my curiosity now has been piqued. I have been to Anglican Church for weddings why not attend a Pentecost Service.

God is good!!! Just started teaching an OCIA class for pre catechumenates, I believe all of them don't have a clue about the mass and why it is structured that way it is, and this is wonderfully explained. And a good refresher course for yours truly!
Thank you for such a beautiful lesson. I attended Catholic Church in the 70s with my dear late Aunt Pearlie in Oak Ridge, TN but never understood the service till now. Feeling very blessed and joyful at the moment.
I just want you to know I feel blessed to have such a resource. I became a Christian last year at 45 years old after being agnostic or atheist my whole life. The evangelical church was accessible to me based in my work times but I had been interested in the original church when I was first thinking about Jesus. Much of the sermons at the evangelical or nondenominational would be a kind of protest of catholicism. They talked of everything being symbolic or not really meaning anything like baptism or the communion. It didn't really sit well with me that 90% of all Christians could have been wrong throughout history. I listened a lot to Greg Smith on Considering Catholicism. He just made sense to me. I have a fondness for the church that brought me to this point but I feel like I now have a more complete understanding. This is emboldening me to persue OCIA and actually attend mass regularly as a non Catholic despite the fact that everyone from my old church has remarked that Catholics are pharisees or the beast.

This, is in fact NOT a proper Catholic Mass. The Traditional Latin Mass is the only Mass that is proper. Shame on you, Padre.
There should be more vídeo about the mass this one. The traditional mass is not what Jesus wanted. The TLM mass is not the mass of the Body of Christ. It is of the priest turning back to the people. People do not participate in the msss etc
Receiving communion in the hands was the practice of the early church. Christ born in the human hands. St Cyril of Jerusalem in the 4th century promoted comunión in the hands. It was real bread, not like of our times….
Where was I forgiven,for my venal sins. You need more work Father. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 how is it only,28% believe,Eucharist is the real Presence. Only 22% of priest believe. Preach this each mass. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

After the priest repeats the words of our Lord while holding up the host and chalice? Or…
After the “great amen”?
