I think this is what happened according to maps ( or at least what i feel like makes sense):
The among uses work at a company called Mira hince MIRA HQ which based on research for extraterresial locations sends them on missions, via transports like airship. Skeld is their space military ship, and it lands at polus for research purposes. Then, when they go back, skeld crashed sending them to fungle. Then they have to build a ship to get back to HQ.
