When the parasite infects the crewmates, it
mutates the crewmate and it turns into a impostor, it rewrites the brain and it thinks the other crewmates are its enemy and it kills them.
I have a theory
What is the imposters are the humans? We know that crewmates only have 1 bone which is weird since humans have more than that, we never actually see the inside of an imposter, the imposter could have been sent to eliminate the alien crewmates

In the book there is a theory that make sense. It says that polis was the home of the aliens and then human came, took over the half that was not occupied and then found out that on the other half, there was life. After that a war started on the planet resulting in the aliens being forced to leave and the half they occupied being blown up. However, years later they came back and tried getting the planet back so there was a spacial war and the skeld is actually a alien ship captured by the humans explaining its odd shape compared to like the airship but the alien transformed themselves into viruses that can take over the human body or if the infection doesn't work, explode the person in half in, and i quote "a firework of blood". So the imposter is a normal crewmate who got infected by the alien/virus and started killing everyone on the skeld.
